Spring Season Coming Soon!!
January 18 marked the end of the Fall Season for 15s, 16s, 17s, & 18s. Good Luck to the players in your High School Seasons. The Spring 2014 Tryouts (for new players only) are TENTATIVELY set for April 26/27 of 2014. The first spring practice for all the players continuing from the 2013 fall season, new players from the spring of 2014, and not in CIF playoffs, is the first week of May. Tryout Flyer will be posted in either February or March.
SMBC BOYS SUCCESS @ THE HOLIDAY CLASSIC!
We congratulate all of our SMBC Boys teams who competed hard and performed well at the SCVA’s 2013 Boys Volleyball Holiday Classic. Here are some snip-its from our coaches:
# – SMBC 15-Black finish 34th overall at the Holiday Classic. Every player on the team had a strong performance and the team improved a lot over the of the tournament. The highlight of the tournament were wins over 949 15′s and Legacy’s 16s.
# – SMBC 17-Black started the weekend seeded 18th overall in the 18 Open division out of 86 teams. Pool One the team won every match in 2 games. Pool Two began with a win over SG Elite 18′s in 2, followed by a pair of hard fought losses to San Clemente 17′s and HBC 17′s. The team held seed and battled in the Silver Bracket playoffs against Bones 18′s. In a very tight 3-game match the SMBC 17-Black lost with the scores being 25-27, 25-23, 14-16. The team finished as seeded at 18th overall. SMBC 17-Black continues to be one of the Top Five 17′s teams in the region, placed in the Top 20.
# – After a long two day tournament, SMBC 14-Black proved they could hang with best, finishing .500 over 8 matches and just missing a potential top 10 finish after a close four-point loss in 3 sets.
# – SMBC 16-North had a strong showing at the Holiday Classic, holding seed all the way through the tournament with some very strong wins and close, competitive losses. Setter Mike Trunzo, Ozzie Amadi, and Sawyer Burke were very effective for the squad on offense.
# – SMBC 18 Black entered the tournament ranked 13th overall. Day one saw the squad win three matches in two games with libero Grant Amendola filling in at setter for the ill Nick Wittbrodt, who returned to the lineup in time to set the squad to wins over Santa Barbara and #14 overall Arizona, bringing the record to 5-0. Day two saw the team square off #10 overall Balboa, but with a huge performance by kill leader Max Nua and critical blocks by Nick Van Loo and Andrew Workman, the team triumphed in two sets. In playoffs, the 18-Black squad lost a hard-fought match against #7 SCVC to earn a Top Ten finish at 9th place overall.
# – SMBC 16 Silver played one of its best tournaments of the year at the Holiday Classic. In the first round of pool play the team pulled an upset to move up a division, with the help of captains David Ho and David Williams. The team battled all weekend long and ended up holding their seed during playoffs.
# – SMBC 16 Black began the Holiday Classic seeded #7 overall, fulfilling the promise they showed early in the season with great hard work and improvement. The squad earned several victories and lost a few close, hard-fought matches, eventually reaching the Silver Bracket Playoff finals en route to a Top Ten finish.
# – A young team with a great deal of talent, SMBC 18 Silver experienced many successes and challenges at the Holiday Classic. After a tough first day featuring a competitive loss to the eventual classic champions, the team rebounded on day two with strong wins, including a 33-31 game one win in the playoffs. The squad won the Flight 3B playoff bracket finals and is currently ranked #26 overall in the SCVA 18’s behind excellent play and leadership by captain setter Chase Venables and libero Brad Comisar, and a group of excellent teammates.

SMBC 16 Black Wins Bronze Medal in 16 Open at Junior Nationals!
We congratulate Coach Charles Gage and our SMBC 16 Black squad on their Bronze Medal in the 16 Open Division at the 2013 Boys Volleyball Junior National Championships. The medal caps off an excellent season which also saw the squad win the SCVA 16′s Division Championship. Well done, gentlemen!
SMBC 15 Black Wins Silver Medal in 15 Club at Junior Nationals!

SMBC 16 Black Wins SCVA 16′s Division Championship with Highest Overall Points!
We congratulate Coach Charles Gage and our SMBC 16 Black squad on their championship season in the SCVA. The team finished in the first place spot in the overall points rankings after a stellar season featuring many wins. The group now takes its collective talents to Dallas, where they will compete for a medal in the 16 Open Division at the Junior National Championships. Good luck, gentlemen!
